In 2014, members joined official delegatioins to the Fourth Review Conference of the UN Programme of Action on small arms in New York to ensure that the Pacific perspective remains firmly on the agenda. Members also collected thousands of signatures for an Amnesty International ‘No Arms for Atrocities’ petition, delivered to Australia’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
At a conference hosted in Brisbane by the Australian government, the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat, and Oxfam Australia, PSAAG members helped develop a common position on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). In Vanuatu, PSAAG worked with Oxfam Australia in addressing the Melanesian Spearhead Group to shore up regional support for consultations at the United Nations on the ATT. In Wellington, PSAAG hosted a workshop to develop a two-year strategy supporting members to engage their governments in armed violence reduction. Our members met with Members of the New Zealand Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and civil society groups.
